CME Group Sees Record Volume Across its Battery Metals Complex
The derivatives marketplace said 2,587 contracts were traded across its suite of battery metals futures and options, surpassing the previous record of 2,301 contracts set on 11 February.
Open interest also reached a new peak of 64,387 contracts.
“These new records were driven by our benchmark Lithium Hydroxide and Cobalt Metal futures, which each reached over 1,000 contracts traded on a single day for the first time,” said Jin Hennig, Managing Director and Global Head of Metals at CME Group.
“We are also seeing strong growth in commercial users, helping to attract a broader range of participants and further enhancing price discovery.”
The exchange said average daily volume across the complex this year stands at 837 contracts, doubling the figure from 2024. All 10 of the top volume days for battery metals have occurred in 2025.
CME Group offers a range of battery metals products, including futures and options on Lithium Hydroxide, Lithium Carbonate, Cobalt Metal, Cobalt Hydroxide, and Spodumene. All contracts are listed by and subject to the rules of COMEX.
