Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) Chair and CEO Maureen Jensen announced today the following appointments to the OSC. The Commissioners will each serve a two-year term effective February 2, 2017.
Robert P. Hutchison spent more than 40 years with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, where he practiced business law, focusing on financial services. In addition to advising participants in capital markets and derivatives activities, he specialized in regulatory infrastructure for the private securities industry, including working with the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC), Mutual Fund Dealers Association (MFDA), Canadian Investor Protection Fund, MFDA Investor Protection Fund, and the Canadian Depository for Securities Ltd.
Mark J. Sandler is the senior partner of Cooper, Sandler, Shime & Bergman LLP and has been an appellate and trial litigator specializing in criminal and regulatory law for 37 years. Mr. Sandler has extensive experience as an adjudicator on administrative tribunals. He chaired disciplinary hearings at IIROC and MFDA, chaired the Appeal Panel of the Law Society of Upper Canada, and served as a part-time member of the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.
The breadth of expertise that Bob and Mark bring to the Commission will assist us in protecting investors and fostering fair and efficient capital markets in Ontario,” said Chair Jensen. “I am immensely pleased to welcome Bob and Mark to the Commission, given their longstanding leadership and commitment to public service.
The Commission has two related but independent roles. It serves as the Board of Directors of the OSC and performs a regulatory function, which includes making rules and policies and adjudicating administrative proceedings.
