HSBC Chairman to Step Down on September 30

HSBC confirmed on Friday that Sir Mark Tucker will step down as Group Chairman and board member on September 30, 2025.

The announcement follows an earlier statement in May indicating Sir Mark’s intention to retire before year-end.

His departure comes as AIA Group announced Sir Mark’s appointment as its Independent Non-executive Chairman, effective 1 October.

HSBC noted that Sir Mark will continue to serve as a strategic adviser to the Group CEO and Board during the ongoing search for his successor.

Ann Godbehere, HSBC’s Senior Independent Director, is leading the selection process for the next permanent Chair.

“Our focus is on securing the best candidate to lead the Board and wider Group over the next phase of our growth and development,” she said, adding that the Nomination and Corporate Governance Committee continues to make progress.

In the interim, Brendan Nelson, currently an independent non-executive Director and Chair of the Group Audit Committee, will assume the role of Interim Group Chair.

“I am honoured to lead HSBC during this period of transition,” Nelson said.

Godbehere thanked Sir Mark for his eight years of leadership, saying, “We wish him well in his new role at AIA.
