Hong Kong’s SFC re-appoints Carlson Tong as Chairman

Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has announced the re-appointment for another three-year term of its Chairman – Mr Carlson Tong. The appointment gets effective on October 20, 2015.

Mr Tong has been serving as a non-executive director of the SFC since April 1, 2011 and was first appointed as Chairman on October 20, 2012.

Mr Tong is a UK chartered accountant and a Hong Kong certified public accountant. He joined KPMG in the UK in 1979 and returned to Hong Kong in 1985. Since his retirement from KPMG in 2011, Mr Tong has been active in public and community services.

sfc_hkAt present, he is a member of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute Limited and a member of the Financial Services Professional Board, Malaysia.

Before joining the SFC, Mr Tong had been involved in the regulatory work of the securities and futures markets. He served as a member of the Main Board and Growth Enterprise Market Listing Committee of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited from 2002 to 2006, and was its Chairman from 2004 to 2006.

Commenting on the extension of his term as Chairman, he said:

“I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the SFC for another three years, especially at a time when financial regulation has taken on added significance in a global market that has become more complex and challenging”.

The SFC’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ashley Alder, added:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Carlson over the past three years who has been unstinting in his support and guidance to ensure the SFC achieves its core objectives of protecting investors and facilitating Hong Kong’s development as a leading international financial centre. I look forward to working with Carlson in his new term.”

Mr Tong added: “I look forward to continue working with Ashley and other members of the Board in strengthening Hong Kong’s position as a world-class financial hub and enhancing collaboration with our counterparts in the Mainland.”
